involvement iN the community

The Dental Hygiene Program at Niagara College has offered me
many opportunities for community involvement.

These include:

  • Rapelje Lodge Volunteer (January 2017-August 2017)

-Providing basic oral care and oral health education to the residents at this long-term care facility in Welland, ON.

  • Collaboration with Niagara College PSW Students (March 2017)

-Educating about oral health and the proper oral care measures that should be followed daily.

-Increasing the oral care knowledge of the PSW students as they assist their patients with their daily personal and oral health care.

  • Collaboration with Brock University Nursing Students (February 2017)

-Educating about oral health and the proper oral care measures that should be followed daily.

-Increasing the oral care knowledge of the nursing students as they not only need to care for their patients’ overall health, but their oral health also as there is a connection.

  • Welland Hospital Volunteer (September 2016-December 2016)

-Providing basic oral care and oral health education to the residents in the ECU wing.

I have also been involved in the community besides the community involvement opportunities offered to me in the program.

For example:

  • Gift from the Heart Event Volunteer (April 8, 2017)

-Gift from the Heart is an annual one-day event, where RDHs from all across Canada
participate and provide free dental hygiene services to people who are less fortunate
and cannot afford the dental care that they need.

-I assisted Kristie McGowan, a local and independent RDH that owns Smiles for Miles, mobile dental hygiene services, with this event that she participated in.

Kristie was looking for a couple volunteers to help her out with the event and I was deeply interested. It is such an incredible event where RDHs give back to the community from their hearts and through their hands to people who truly need dental hygiene care the most!
